Photo Analysis:
I chose these two photos in particular because it shows the transitions of power between one president to the next. It shows young John F. Kennedy, leader of our nation until his tragic death, where older and more experienced Lyndon B. Johnson took over.
Political Theme: Montgomery bus boycott
The Montgomery bus boycott has a backlash from people that were growing weary of the racial segregation on the buses of Montgomery Alabama. The bus boycott started on December 1, 1955 when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat for a white man, and ended December 20, 1956. There was a federal ruling in the end of that year that ruled Montogemery's segregated buses to be unconstitutional. Martin Luther King Jr. first made a name for himself while being a huge advocate in ended racial segregation on the buses of Alabama.
Economic Theme: The Great Society
The great society was a set of domestic programs set up by President Lyndon B. Johnson and his democratic friends in congress during the 1960's. Two main goals of the great society were to end the evils of poverty and racial segregation. The president also started new programs for education, medical care, and city issues during this time period.
Social Theme:The Hippie Movement
The hippie movement was a movement that started in the United States during the early 1960's. The origin of the hippie movement is traced back to classical culture and, to European social movements during the 1960's. These hippies fell in love with a smooth atmospher, including peace and harmony. They were mainly assosciated with smoking pot. A large majority of them were draft-dodgers during the Vietnam war.
How did the Civil Rights Movement lead to the Vietnam War/Watergate?
When the Vietnam War escalated and was backed by the White House, President Johnson failed to realize the racial problems that American involvement in Vietnam would create. Vietnam would get in the way of protests of the Civil Rights Movement and the rise of Black Power during 1960s America. I do not see how the civil rights movement could have led to the Vietnam war, but people opinions on the Vietnam war had definitly been altered due to the Civil Rights movement.
