Political Analysis:
I am not sure of the true origin of the photo with the young Vietnamese boy next to his baby brother or sister, but I was very saddened to say the least. The boys expression smells fear all over it. Could this be from the American forces? I am not sure. But I do know that they are laying their with just a bowl beside them and no proper sleeping arraingments.
Political Theme: Assassination of RFK
Robert Kennedy was a democratic senator for the state of New York. He, along with his brother, were huge civil rights activists. He is the younger brother of former president John F. Kennedy. He was in the chair as attorny general upon the death of his brother, and continued to keep that posistion after his death. In 1968 he started a campaign to run for president. After he won a California primary, he made a brief speech and then was shot moments afterwards. This was a huge shock to the American public.
Economic Theme: Nixon Shock
The Nixon shock was a series of Economic measures taken by the president in August 15, 1971. This included hiding the convertability of the US dollar into gold. The gold standard system of monetary policy for international exchange of gold deposits in an was addressed in an evening speech to the country. Nixon’s move to sever the link between the dollar’s value and gold reserves ended the Breton Woods system of monetary exchange and changes the dollar to a useless currency whose value is to be determined mainly by market influences. Nixon’s decision resulted from a run on gold exchanges and rampant speculation in gold markets in Europe
Social Theme: Draft Dodgers
Many people were against the war in Vietnam. Some people may have not agreed with it, but still acted when called upon by their country to help out. Others did anything to avoid the draft. They either moved out the country, or burned their draft cards. Many draft dodgers of the time period were hippies. One famous draft dodger was Muhammed Ali, who said it was against his religion to fight in the war.
