Photo Analysis:
I thought the photo of the American flag and Soviet Union flag combined as one was quite fascinating. The cold war was fought between these two countries, and both were the most powerful forces in the world at the time. The two forces were competing over everything at the time, and that includes the right for one flag apparently.
Political Theme: McCarthyism
McCarthyism is the practice of making accusations of disloyalty treason without factual knowledge about the situation. The phrase originially began to criticize the anti-communist pursuits of senator Joseph McCarthy but it soon took on a broader meaning, describing stories of similar efforts. During the McCarthy era, many America citizens were accused of being Communists. The were the focal points of big government meetings and investigations going on in the United States. The main suspects of McCarthyism included government officals, union workers, and entertainment workers.
Economic Theme: White Collar Workforce
The time period of the 1950's was a huge movement for American society. People started making more of themselves besides becoming a farmer or jobs having to do with manual labor. Instead, mainly men, began going to college and attempting to earn a degree. These men were becoming lawyers, doctors, executives in buildings. In doing so, they were gaining a higher salary. The 1950's became the start of the white collar workforce in America.
Social Theme: Stay at home wives
The job of women in the 1950's had changed slightly than society in years before so. Womens job in the 1950's were to stay at home and care for the children. As well as keeping the home clean and preparing the meals for her family upon thier arrival back to the house. Men were making more of thier lives in 1950's than anytime in society beforehand. All women were expecting to stay home and care for anything around the house. This was their job.
How did the Cold War lead to the Civil Rights Movement?
This is the only section i believe did not have a correlation between the two. I feel the Civil Rights movementwas influenced by WW2 becasue many black soldiers showed extreme bravery in the war and were not being compensated for their actions. But i do not believe the Cold war influenced the Civil Rights movement at all.
